Democratic socialist Angie Nixon upsets Alex Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary

Angie Nixon Wins Florida Democratic Senate Primary, Defeating Alex Vindman

Progressive state Rep. Angie Nixon pulled off a stunning upset in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary, defeating heavily favored former National Security Council aide Alex Vindman in a race that will now pit her against Republican incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody. Vindman, a retired lieutenant colonel and Iraq War veteran who gained national prominence testifying during President Donald Trump’s 2019 impeachment hearings, entered the contest with overwhelming financial advantages, raising over $16 million compared to Nixon’s less than $1 million. The victory marks a significant moment in Florida Democratic politics, where a member of the Democratic Socialists of America outmaneuvered an establishment favorite recruited by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to expand the party’s map in this traditionally Republican leaning state.

Nixon’s campaign centered on a progressive platform emphasizing Medicare for all, universal child care, affordable housing, and fully funded public education. Despite being vastly outspent, her grassroots organizing and appeal to working families resonated with primary voters in Jacksonville and beyond. Vindman was recruited to run for the seat by national Democratic leadership who saw him as a strong candidate capable of competing in a challenging political environment. The general election matchup now sets up a stark ideological contrast between Nixon’s progressive vision and Moody’s conservative record as Florida’s attorney general.

Moody easily defeated her Republican challengers in their primary and wasted no time attacking Nixon, calling her a socialist who wants to “destroy this country.” The National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee echoed this messaging, asserting that Florida voters would reject a socialist candidate. Meanwhile, Democratic leadership including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rallied behind Nixon, highlighting Moody’s record on healthcare and insurance issues as vulnerabilities in the general election. Nixon herself extended an olive branch to Vindman’s supporters, emphasizing that her movement welcomes people with different perspectives.

Watch how this race develops as a potential bellwether for whether progressive candidates can compete in swing states during the 2026 election cycle. The general election between Nixon and Moody will test whether Florida voters prioritize the Democratic agenda on healthcare and social programs or embrace Republican arguments about socialism and government overreach.
